Congratulations everyone! You made it the the best weekend of the year, four whole days off work, a splash of sunshine, and 20% off all Rioja at the Vineking under £50. Bank holiday weekends don't get any better than this!
After a storming week of lamb and Rioja themed pop-ups across the shops we thought it was about time we shared some of Spain's finest with those not lucky enough to be sloshing it back in store on those evenings!
First up, a great intro to the world of Rioja Blanco. Yup, that's right, not all Rioja is red. We have a whole host of whites in the shop, some made with 100% viura grapes ages in oak, others with a blend of varieties with no oak to keep their freshness.
The 2015 Rioja Blanco from Camino Real is a blend of Viura, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca that has a short amount of aging in old French oak, giving it a gentle weight and richness, but retaining it's freshness. It has citrus and white flowers on the nose and a lovely stone fruit on the palate. A perfect foray into the world of white Rioja at only £9.99 per bottle, or £7.99 in a mixed case.
Next up, a new-to-us line that we just couldn't resist. 2012 Crianza Rioja Bodegas Amaren.
A blend of 85% Tempranillo 15% Garnacha from old vines, which are aged in oak for 12 months. They split the harvest, and put half into French barrels and half into American to blend the softness of the former with the spice of the latter giving the wine a lovely depth. Bodegas Amaren have chosen to deliberately shy away from overly complex styles, instead focusing on integrity of fruit flavour with just a hint of impact from the aging, making this an exceptionally well drinking Crianza style. It has a lovely ruby red colour, with a clean balsamic nose and nuances of plum and clean oak. Smooth, fruity and spice flavours with toasted oak in the background and a pleasant finish with red fruits and a hint of herbs. Treat yourself! £20.99 per bottle or £16.79 in a mixed case.
