Well here we are, in the final throes of the festive madness with the big day almost upon us and a nap on the sofa with a big glass of something as our reward for all those trips to the high street for the inevitably forgotten gift tags and present for Uncle Bob. 

As ever at the Vineking we want to make things as easy as possible for you, we're the boozy elves who will make choosing wines for the festivities as painless as possible and even pour you a glass while you make up your mind. 

In the true spirits of "go big or go home" we'll be opening bottles here there and everywhere this weekend to make sure you get to taste as broad a range as possible and so that we can show off some of our top picks to get you through until we're open again on the 28th!

Chateau Falfas - a fabulous mature Bordeaux that pairs well with pretty much anything you're choosing to serve because of what a complex and impressive red this is. It has dark forest fruits, a little spice and new wood. Sweet attack, juicy, lively mouth feel. Fresh, zingy with good grip and moderate finish. Coyam - We loved it so much last week we're showing it off again as it's the perfect alternative finish to a meal. Ditch the port and try this sumptuous big bold wine from Chile. It's a blend that changes from vintage to vintage, made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah, Malbec and Mourvèdre and all sorts depending on which vineyard sites are producing the best grapes in any year. There's an unbelievable depth and breadth of flavour to this wine which then unravels generously on the palate.We know you won’t be able to resist finishing the first bottle so why not pick up 2 for £40 (usually £24.99 per bottle)

Of course we know that many of you will be kick-starting your meal with smoked salmon or pate and it would be remiss if we didn't show off a great white to get your day start (after you've polished off the Champers of course). Our pick this year is the Hawksdrift Chardonnay from New Zealand. It's gently barrel fermented to give it just enough richness and weight to balance with salmon or pate, but not so much that it is cloying as it's balanced with intense citrus notes. The ideal transition from bold Champagne to whatever red awaits.
